Favorite memory : Around 1964 Leaving the mediterranean from a six month deployment. I would guess maybe 100 miles in the Atlantic off the coast of Spain. All four boilers blasting with super heat on, we were on our way back to the good old USA then it happened, "Bang" the whole ship shivered. General quarters sounded word throughout the ship was, "what the hell have we hit." Our C.O. was one of the best in the Navy had, he determined real soon we had major propeller damage. The only place that could lift our great ship out of the water was a small town on the South tip of England called South Hamilton. We steamed North on one engine, arriving at South Hamilton. A shipyard crew was waiting to lift the ship in a floating drydock. A new propeller was shipped from the states. We were there for about fourteen days. The local people said we were the first US Navy ship there since War World Two. The town people treated the ships crew like royalty. I would say at least ten beautiful English girls came to Mayport Florida and married the guys they met. PS I do not remember if it was ever determined what the ship hit.

Favorite memory : The fire drill at Mayport, Florida. The base admiral had heard that the fire response training aboard his ships was questionable. He did not want to directly challenge the capability of his ships so he decided to test ours, a reserve training ship of DESRON-34. The Ware's crew that had taken the ship to Vietnam and back had fought fires at sea. The transfer crew from the USS Ault was used to monthly fires at home port created by a power system that would drop a phase. The day of the test found both the fire party leader and assistant fire party leader ashore at the time of the drill. I took the lead of an adhoc team that we fully manned and another person did the same on the other side of the Torpedo Locker, the declared source of the fire. We left the Admiral with a real problem, a reserve fleet ship, without designated leaders had performed above expectations. Was he now going to test his ships?
Worst memory : A Chief, name now forgotten, was running forward down the starboard side of the ship, he grabbed a fire axe almost without breaking stride, continued to the anchor where he cut the cord holding the pelican hook to release the anchor and save the ship. We had just hit the buoy in the Houston Ship Channel, our one working screw was fouled by the buoy chain and we were about to run hard aground if the anchor did not hold. It held, but that was still the moment that the USS Charles R. Ware died.
Shipmate you would like to make contact with : Gale Gilhouse
Children, Granchildren, Great Grandchildren : None. I was told after it was too late that my service at NAVCOMSTA, Key West transmitter site and my work with transmitters on board ship, particularly my previous ship, would reduce my chances of having children.

Special interest/hobbies : His hobbies were family then golfing and dancing
Favorite memory : He loved the med cruise. Told many stories about the liberty . Unfortunaley I cannot remember them enough to tell them here.
Worst memory : Actually is was not the ship. When over seas he had bought a beautiful angora blue sweater for himself and sent it home. When got home his little sister with a big chest had wore it and he could not because of it's mis-shaped form.
Shipmate you would like to make contact with : I would like to hear from any that went on liberty with him as I was not listening with the memoy part of my brain and would love to hear about this as he loved that part of the cruise. Also those who remember working with him.
Children, Granchildren, Great Grandchildren : Too many to count. He married a woman with 6 children that he took on as his own and never looked back. They had several each and at the time he died we had 27 grands and 3 great grands and more since.

    Special Comments :
I went to the 11 reunion and met the wonderful persons Ken served with. No wonder he enjoyed his time on the ship. Mr. Bohan, my son and I talked for some time and Ken served under a great man in my opinion.

Favorite memory : The Opening Of the St. Lawrence Sea Way, we escorted the Britannica (the Royal Yacht of the British Navy). On Board were the President of the United States and the Queen of England
Worst memory : When we dropped anchor in Chicago. In front of the President and the Queen of England and all the naval ships in that great flotilla, I pulled The line that unfurled The American Flag. The only problem it was upside down. That once in a life time photo-op made the front page of all the Chicago newspapers. The Charles R Ware had the American Flag upside down. This is the international emergency distress signal. Every ship including the Royal Yacht began signaling us by flashing light, and radio. The question on the evening news that night was why was that ships flag upside down. Chief Larson, head of the signalman took the brunt of the fallout. Try to imagine what happened to me. For starters I never set foot in Chicago and spent a long long time in the mess deck. Time heals all wounds. So after a while I was back with my shipmates on the signal bridge. Thanks to my fellow signalmen Frank Biondo and Tom Alveraz who I always suspect had a lot to do with it.

Children, Granchildren, Great Grandchildren : One child, a son. Barry Gerald Conley

    Special Comments :
A shout out to my best man and lifetime friend Frank Biondo. After I was Discharged I was welcomed into the Biondo home where I lived for the next four years in New York City. I will always feel it was an honor and privilege to have been part of that special family. And as we all know without Frank Biondo,s dedication over the years there would be no final Home Port in the home town of Charles R. Ware at the McMinn Museum in Athens Tennessee.
